Event Description:

The Brampton Board of Trade is hosting a full-day symposium on September 26th to explore the future of housing and transportation in Brampton.

As the city grapples with a housing shortage and prepares for significant new construction to meet provincial targets, the morning session will begin with an update from the City of Brampton, presented by Steve Ganesh, Commissioner of Planning, Building and Growth Management, followed by an in-depth discussion on the housing crisis featuring Dr. Mike Moffatt, one of the country’s leading housing experts.

Dr. Mike Moffat, one of Canada's top housing experts, has been a game-changer in shaping housing policy at every political level. As we push to dramatically boost housing supply, we're faced with critical challenges: infrastructure limitations, employment land use, housing types, and more. How do we tackle Development Charges (DCs) while balancing the need for municipal funding with the urgent need to make housing affordable? Navigating these complexities is key to unlocking the future of housing and ensuring communities thrive.

After lunch, the focus will shift entirely to Brampton’s traffic challenges and planned public transit infrastructure.

We will have an address from the Honourable Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation, who will discuss provincial investments in Brampton's transportation infrastructure, including Highway 413.

We will then follow Minister Sarkaria's address with an expert panel that will provide an essential overview of the root causes of congestion and explore practical solutions. While we may not be able to eliminate congestion entirely, there are actionable strategies to reduce our reliance on vehicles and integrate alternative modes of transportation into our city's planning. This panel is comprised of industry experts who will walk us through the data on congestion in our city.

The congestion panel will then be followed by an expert panel on transportation planning and mobility in Brampton. As new housing developments rise, the need for expanded transportation infrastructure becomes critical. Key projects such as LRT, BRT, and GO Expansion will shape Brampton's future. To meet our aspiration of a more liveable city, we also need to explore other modes of transportation, including micro-mobility and pedestrianization.

To conclude the day, there will be an address and fireside chat with the Honourable Graham McGregor, Associate Minister of Auto Theft and Bail Reform, focused on his advocacy at Queen’s Park for securing funding for the Riverwalk project in downtown Brampton, an essential infrastructure initiative for flood mitigation and housing intensification. This fireside will be forward looking, and tie in all the themes discussed throughout the day.

This event, the first of its kind, will bring together decision-makers and stakeholders from industry, government, academia, and civil society to discuss and shape advocacy priorities for Brampton's future in housing and transportation.
